Minnesota Nursery Landscape Practice Exam

In landscapes, water-use efficiency improves when irrigation is matched to what plants actually need, using real-time data and automatic adjustments. The best approach is to use weather-based controllers, rain sensors, and efficient irrigation scheduling because these tools tailor watering to current and forecast conditions, plant water demand, and soil moisture. Weather-based controllers (ET-based) adjust duration and frequency based on local climate data, preventing overwatering on cool, wet days and ensuring adequate moisture during hot spells. Rain sensors stop irrigation after rainfall, avoiding waste and deep percolation. Efficient scheduling breaks watering into appropriate cycles to reduce runoff and allow better infiltration and root uptake.

Watering at dawn with no scheduling can reduce some evaporation, but without sensors or ET data it cannot account for rainfall or soil moisture, leading to over- or under-watering. Fixed schedules with no sensors ignore real-time conditions and often waste water or stress plants. Flood irrigation is highly inefficient in landscape settings, causing substantial runoff and deep percolation losses and is not suitable for most MN landscapes.
